hey guys I know not many of you all will see this, maybe not even one. But there's something i really need to announce!!!

I REALLY MISS YOU ALL! Sorry for being unable to make it yesterday last minute because I was helping out another band and I was way late besides being totally shagged out. Their syf would be in 2 weeks time so this comes the worse part.

My brother's birthday is next week so I would need to rush home for dinner the next week too! (i hope i wont be late for this one)

THEN the SYF of marist band is 2 weeks later so I wouldn't be able to see this beloved class. Damn.

THUS, I hope to demand a class outing on the 17th of April 3 weeks later and I want to bring you guys to a great ramen place. I'm really sorry and I hope that this little explanation and perhaps a little effort will be able to make up to you guys when I miss out on so many outings all the time =(

Hey classmates.. its 12:03am on the 31st of December 2008 that i am starting this post... guess from here on some will be beginning to feel extra nostalgic about the significance of the ending of the year that is coming within the next 24 hours... and also the starting of a new year....

2008 sure passed by in a flash... and i guess all thats left now is to hand out all the long overdue Thank-You's to the wonderful classmates you all have been, especially over the last year. Though time may have run out, hope everyone will stay in touch eh?

Perhaps as a matter of courtesy i think i shall start the trend of updating about my life that i think my classmates ought to know about!

Currently im awaiting for my enlistment on the 9th of Jan, BMTC 1, Tekong. at 9am. <-- anyone same?

Currently not applying to any unis whatsoever, is just gonna wait for As results to come out.. However i do have an eye out for a course by NTU. Bachelor of Science (Maritime Studies) with Business Major. so MOST likely i will be applying to NTU.. so thats where i'll probably be in the enxt few years! will update you peeps again!

On the way home today, I saw a postman placing a small stack of letters into the mailbox of a family. 3 kids rushed out to the mailbox and grabbed the fresh mail gleefully while the clouds above gave a light shower that's so fine it resembles snow. Today, I understand why Christmas can be a season to look forward to. To tell all our friends that we've not forgotten them, to tell them that they've been part of our lives.

For the first time I actually receive 2 cards for x'mas, it may seem little, but it made my day =) And thanks for the rest whose cards is on the way to my mailbox =) This Christmas, I somehow managed to feel the warm feeling spread over me gradually.

ok i've managed to book the chalet through my uncle who's a civil servant. due to the good rates, i've booked aloha loyang, dbl storey chalet with 4 bedrooms, which is more accessible then aloha changi.

it'll be on the 24th to 26th november, so pls keep those dates free!

also, the total cost for the chalet is LESS than 30 a person. ill still collect the 30 from the rest, and the remaining will be used to fund the food for the chalet. so pls try to pay up asap.

Hey 6D! This is to update you on the progress of the class tee. As it is now, we're hoping you can help us by commenting or at least letting us know what you think on certain issues.

However, I think it is necessary to show you the history of our class tee. Credit all goes to Yijing for coming up with an awesome idea for the design :)

The last time we did a survey in class was really to see which format you guys wanted (line around the shirt or a full sized pic on one side), not so much about the actual design (as in the picture - which can be revised). We hope you understood that and voted accordingly :)

Anyway, the revised design is somewhat out! So please take a look and give comments. Firstly, if you SUPER EXTREMELY BU SHUANG something... hm... tell us... we will deliberate :D

Even though I'm quite sure i didn't leave anyone out, I still need to you to help check and see that YOU and YOUR FRIEND are there. I know I forgot to label some people. I did it on the paper later but haven't updated and scanned in.

Hey guys, while posting some STJ photos, I came across some pictures me and my friends took at MacRitchie after our training. When i saw the mesmerising sunset at MacRitchie after my training, the photographer in me knew instinctively that that is the time for me to exhibit my IMBA SKILLS...hehe..just kidding but since I have got no where to post these pictures, i have decided to post it here for all to appreciate the beautiful side of one of Singapore's finest reservoir , the place where Hwachong holds its annual X-Country...Actually, MacRitchie is quite a lovely place, where one can be one with the nature. Where else can you see monkeys answer its nature call in nature,(erm, the lil' monkey in our class uses the toilet!!!)and where else can you see squirrels running from trees to trees...Jealous of me now? So... Follow this route:
Cell -> Is -> I1 -> R1 -> I1 -> Is -> Cell.
This is one closed loop. So voltage across resistor = voltage across cell = emf of cell.

The 2nd route:
Cell -> Is -> I2 -> R2 -> I2 -> Is -> Cell.

Since ralph-the-great has spoken, let me try to attempt to try describing some reactions. From one of the most common:

Oxidation reactions:
KMnO4 + H2SO4 or K2Cr2O7 + H2SO4
KMnO4 is a very strong oxidation agent. The only mild oxidation reaction it does is via Alkene where it forms a Diol (in cold alkaline conditions). Usually for strong oxidation uses, heat under reflux as most organic compounds are volatile.
Alcohols -> Ketones/Aldehydes, Alkenes -> cleavage, side chain oxidation of alkyl benzenes.
K2Cr2O7 - useful in mild oxidation, the one we see is from alcohol -> aldehyde. Mild oxidation, heat with distillation.

Hydrogenation/Reduction[OPPOSITE OF OXIDATION!] reactions:
H2 with Ni catalyst, High T, High P. OR LiAlH4 then add H2O.
NOTE: alkenes do not react with LiAlH4 -> H-atom in LiAlH4 exists as H-, therefore, since it's negative, it will NOT react with your alkene as the double bond is e-rich.
Reactions: Alkenes -> Alkanes, Cyanides -> Amines, Carboxylic acids, Ketones & aldehydes -> alcohols.

Dehydration reactions[Remove H2O]
Reagents: Conc. H2SO4, heat.
ALMOST anything that has H2O as a by-product can use conc H2SO4 cos it's a dehydrating agent.
Alcohol -> Alkenes, Carboxylic acids&alcohols -> esters.

Take note of HalogenoAlkanes reactions:
Reagents are usually dissolved in ethanol as they're insoluble in water. There's one exception of NaOH[aq] for nucleophilic substitution of the halide.
-> NaOH in alcohol will cause elimination. HOWEVER if there's no beta hydrogen present, substitution of the halide WILL take place.

Understanding the kind of reactions can save you the memory work as ralph said =) You can also look into nucleophilic substitutions and other reactions. Understand why these reagents will cause certain reactions =)

AHHH GG. Look at that mess. Chem summary for aliphatic organic chem is really disastrous... But upon slight edits....

Hope you guys like it. IMO it's quite impossible to memorise like that -.- so ummm... Do individual summaries for each topic. Then start memorising from there.

Do not forget other parts of your organic chem:
Alkanes - Physical properties, petrol cracking and so on
Alkenes - Cis-trans isomerism
Arenes - Aromaticity of benzene ring
Halogen Compounds - Optical Isomerism
Hydroxy - phenol -> effects of e-donating/ e-withdrawing groups.
Carboxylic acids -> e-donating/e-withdrawing groups on the stability of carboxylate ion?

Work hard. organic chem is a huge topic.

Hey, was just wondering if everyone still wants to have fun after the CNY break =) Afterall, CNY lasts for 15 days, and the past 4 days seem so unhappening for everyone [except a few, eg me? :s I slept at 4 for the first 2 days and 1 yesterday]

Anyway, the point is you guys can come over and have fun in my house the coming saturday =) There'll be alot alot of food, BUT very few things to play. Bring cards, bring your mahjong tiles [i have the table], board games and come and have fun =)

haha which reminds me, on CNY celebration that day, i and a few friends go walk around the carnival then got this stall selling nachos with cheese. then we jus stand there and wait to buy, but the stall ppl (Ares de) were still trying to fix their machine and stuff the cheese into the machine la!!! wah lau then we go there and act buay song and keep suan-ing them bout their slow and inefficient service. then directly opposite them another Apollo stall sell nachos at $2.00.

then we jus threaten to go buy nachos from the Apollo ppl instead, make them scared abit. haha then we managed to bargain the nachos from $2.50 to $1.50!!! then somemore still bargain for extra cheese and nachos for FREE.

muahaha super shuang... super funny to see their dunno-wat-to-do-to-handle-us face. haha then they still say we like aunties bargaining, hmmm lucky they gals if not i go boX their face liao le! hehe. but we see them poor thing so jus buy the nachos for $2 haha =D we surely not so bad de mah... all of us have great big hearts de...

Another messsage from Mrs Sim regarding your graphic calculators.

Eh, for your graphic calculators right, instead of using the normal way of clearing memory, use another method such that your applications will not be deleted.

Firstly, turn off your calculator (This can only be done when your calculator is switched off).
Secondly, press [2] [8] [on] simultaneously.
Stuff will appear. Press OK.
After this you should see like a "memory cleared" page.

So this way right, memory is cleared but the applications would not be deleted. So forget the old way of clearing memory. Yup.

For those who actually have the applications on your GC, please tell me whether this works or not and what happens. Do you see the mem. clear page with like "mem cleared for singapore" or something"?

Hi all,

.. to those who mysteriously turned up after my dinner ... ha like harry potter... Really Shen2 Tong1 Guan3 Da4 !! But i had a pleasant surprise :) especially after 2 tiring days. Here's one of the photos that was taken that day. There're a few cameras that day. Looks like we all didn't know which to look at first. I'm still waiting for the bridal shop to give me the photos, then i'll select and develop the nicer one for you :) , ok? In fact, my hubby initially didn't realise you are my students, thought you were some of our guests ... hmmm... the uniform gave it away :p

Take a good rest before the hectic 2008 ... (but also take some time to revise your weaker subjects/ topics ... next yr will be too busy with other stuff ;p ) Happy Holiday!! Hope you had a good Fac outing today !!

Pls make sure that your group is ready to present something for OP by monday. We dont want to upset our pw teacher again.

And she says that if our presentations are good the first time round, we might not need to have the extra two sessions. so yayy jiayou everyone.

Project Work

Pls be reminded that our FINAL COPY of the WR is due tomorrow, FRIDAY. Miss Lim wants to see us by EIGHT in the morning for our FINAL SUBMISSION of the WR.

Some things to remember:
Check the QP [question paper] to make sure your format is correct.
your Introductions.
Bibliography must be in alphabetical order.
You must submit both a HARD AND SOFT COPY OF THE WR. [She said Cd-rom?]
File your hard copy in that green file that she gave us.
All contents page must have page number indicated for each section.
Don't plagarise.
HAND IN YOUR WR DRAFTS AS WELL.

Hand in your EOM drafts if you haven't already done so.

Oral Presentation:
must be ready to show her something by next week.
And we need to arrange for two more sessions next week for our OP rehearsal thingys. So... which days do youall want?

Latest update, for the benefit of those who didnt or couldnt see dingjia's tag on the tagboard,

we are required to attend flag raising as long as we have lessons on that day itself, irregardless of the time.
